2018 NYS Grades 3-8 Tests Standards Mapping

//2018 NYS Grades 3-8 Tests Standards Mapping

Every year the New York State Education Department releases information on the mapping of the grades 3-8 test questions to the standards. This is important because it helps educators understand what is being tested and gives us a glimpse into the test design. Combined with the released questions (approximately 75% of the tests) this can be a powerful resource for educators in developing appropriately rigorous curriculum.

This year the test design was different, in part, because the test was shorter. There were also some significant departures from the prior year test design that shows up in the mapping. The most significant is the absence of any questions mapped to standard 1 (identify text based details/inferencing). We speculate that it may be because standard 1 skills may be considered embedded in most questions.
